Sound. This beauty is from Ohio duo The Black Keys, who hit the big time, after several years of bubbling under the surface of the mainstream, with their sixth album, Brothers in 2010. This number is from last year’s release El Camino and offers a contrast to the band’s usually bluesy and sludgy rock. Love the guitar solo as well.
Soul. Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37: 4
Sound. To celebrate the rare bit of sun we’ve had today, I’m going to share the latest offering from Australian psychadellic troop Pond who share members with one of my favourite bands of 2010, Tame Impala. It’s always sunny in Australia. Kinda sunny today in Cardiff. A somewhat tenuous link, I know. Full of fuzz and sumptuous sonic sounds. Perfect for the summer.
Vision. I’ve always wondered what it would like to have a pet penguin. Obviously these guys did too. These two Australian lads thought it would be a good idea to drunkenly stumble into Sea World and steal a penguin. So thinking alkong those lines, before RSPCA and that were big on the scene, here are some photos of obscure pets.
Soul. The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion. Proverbs 28:1
Sound. As we depart the rainy days of April we step into the Month of May. Today’s tune is by everyone’s favourite Canadian indie band, Arcade Fire. Most bands wouldn’t be able to pull off being fronted by a husband and wife combo, but they manage it with aplomb. This is pulled from 2010 concept album The Suburbs which was probably my favourite album of that year. By far the heaviest track on the album, it’s a great way to welcome in a new month. Enjoy kids.
Vision. These photos are of abandoned theme parks and fairgrounds. Ominous.
Soul. The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe. Proverbs 29:25
Sound. I thought this was a fitting choice for today seeing as it is Willie Nelson’s 79th birthday. Wouldn’t call myself a huge fan of his music, country music isn’t exactly my scene but this one’s on the Forrest Gump soundtrack (which is incredibly good) and sounds great when you’re travelling. You can see why this man’s besties with Snoop.
Vision. I watched Avengers on Saturday night and although it was great, I felt as if some of the characters had poor excuses for super-powers. Hawk-Eye’s greatest feature is the fact that he shares the name with the technology used at Wimbledon to decipher whether a ball was in or not and his ‘super-power’ is his bow and arrow skills. Oh dear. To celebrate, I’m gonna look at some more rubbish super-powers.
Soul. This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. 2 Samuel 22:31
Sound. Seeing this man live tomorrow. Miles Kane has already been in two bands and a rather high-profile side project but he’s now making a name for himself with his solo stuff, which is great. His album Colour Of The Trap is great but it doesn’t quite capture his raw energy and showmanship that is so evident when he’s on stage. Have a listen.
Vision. Man’s best friend.
Soul. Morning, noon, and night I cry out in my distress, and the LORD hears my voice. Psalm 55:17
Sound. Props to a good friend of mine, Beenie for pointing me towards this band. Haven’t really fallen for this nu- folk business that’s been massive in the last few years or so. So it’s sad to see that Dry The River have fallen into the same bracket as some of those guys but they’ve got a backbone and a bite to their music which i haven’t seen in the others (ahem Mumford & Sons). Great lyrics too. Whole album’s fantastic. Further listening.
Vision. Never knew how they built this until I saw this photo. Pretty incredible.
Soul. Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. James 1:12
Sound. Today’s offering is from Minnesota 5-piece Howler. Admittedly, the lead singer’s got a bit of a Marmite voice. The guitars are somewhat ear-arresting.
Vision. I don’t know about you but sometimes I find myself forgetting that the world of black and white photographs was actually colour. Events like the Great Depression and the World Wars seem to have only happened in monochrome. Suits the mood. These are from colour photos from the 40s and 50s. And yes, Coca Cola still dominates advertising.
Soul. Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10
